Dr Robert Hunter specialises in pavement design, asphalts, asphalt failures, road and highway defects: their diagnosis and correction, maintenance and construction of highways and in adjudication, claims, contract preparation, contract issues and the wonderful NEC3 and NEC4.

He is a recognised authority on all aspects of the behaviour of asphalts including their design, specification and behaviour in service and how and why they fail. He regularly prepares reports for Clients on asphalt failures which cover the technical and contractual ramifications.

He contributed to and edited the highly successful "Bituminous Materials In Road Construction" and its successor "Asphalts In Road Construction". He contributed to and was technical editor of the revised 5th and 6th Editions of the "Shell Bitumen Handbook". He contributed to the "ICE Manual of Construction Materials".

He played a significant role in The Institute of Asphalt Technology, the UK's primary learned body for asphalt professionals. He was a Member of the IAT Council, Chair of the Technical Committee and a Member of the Publications Committee.

He has been a member of the Dispute Resolution Panel of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

He has wide experience in Contract Specifications and Claims. He wrote "Claims In Construction Contracts".

He has prepared contract documents for a wide range of Clients including a suite for the procurement of £38M worth of road maintenance and construction for a local authority using the NEC Term Service Contract.

He has been assessed and registered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as an Adjudicator. He has acted as Adjudicator in many disputes with values up to £10M. He has acted as Expert in a number of Expert Determinations with values in excess of £10M.

He has delivered many technical papers and regularly gives presentations on all manner of highway and legal issues including Pavement Design, NEC3, Bills of Quantities for Highway Works and A Practical Introduction to Asphalts - Their Use, Specification & Supervision. These have been delivered all over the UK and in Ireland.
